"There is no crueller tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of law and in the
name of justice."
Charles de Montesquieu,
1689-1755
It has been assessed that over 280 innocent Australians currently languish in prisons throughout our nation; men and women who have been wrongly accused and damned by fabricated evidence, corrupt police, hostile juries, overzealous prosecutors and genuine human error. Offering our pro bono legal support in an effort to free them, ranks as a priority along with securing their pardons and compensation. And another parallel priority is securing pardons and compensation for the innocent who have been released after serving full terms.
But while that work goes on, we need to vigorously ensure that no further injustices against innocent Australians occur. And those injustices emanate, in no small measure, from civil proceedings not just criminal.
We are calling on every retired lawyer, barrister, paralegal, and every retired member of the Australian judiciary to dedicate - if humanly possible - just some of your time to this cause.
Teams of three Voluntary Case Assessors will review each complaint (i.e. Request for Assistance) brought before us. From here, these tribunals will determine, from their findings, the course of action to be taken. And those matters which need to be urgently addressed will be apportioned firstly to The Australian Justice Tribunal - resources providing - and then, the overflow to Law firms who are prepared to act on a pro bono basis; and we know there are many.
And please consider this. We will not be depriving Australian Law firms of revenue. The cases we handle have been, or will be in the 'too hard basket' and incapable of being funded any further. Your response to this call will be life-changing in the truest sense of that term.
Please email a condensed version of your CV and your offer of assistance - no more than the equivalent of two A4 pages - to: admin@TheAJT.org.au, attention The Secretary (no attachments please) or write to: The Secretary, The AJT, PO Box 14, Moorabbin BC, Moorabbin Vic 3189.
